Toughened glass is five times stronger than annealed glass and shatters into dull-edged pieces. For balustrades, the New Zealand & Australia standard requires a handrail or top-capping system to keep other glass panels in place in case one breaks.

Toughened laminated glass is a safe option for homeowners, as it ensures the glass remains bonded together if it breaks. The current New Zealand & Australia standard stipulates that an interlinking handrail or clamps are required when EVA or PVB laminated glass is used for balustrades.

SentryGlas™ balustrades are the only type of balustrade that can be used in a fully frameless manner. This is because the glass contains an interlayer that is 100 times stronger and five times stiffer than traditional laminates, ensuring that deflection is kept to a minimum in the unlikely event of breakage.
